Come, O Jesus
Come quickly, O Lord
For Your Church, which You founded, is not well
And neither are we.
Come!
Did You not say, “Behold, I am coming quickly”? Then why the delay, O God?
Have You forgotten us, or are You sleeping in the stillness of the stars?
Have the clouds secluded You?
Are You working in Paradise and become too busy for us?
Come now, leave Your work for a day — nay, for an hour — nay, for a moment
Why do You not come? Has the gate of heaven been shut?
Or are You busy with the righteous and forgetful of us?
Or have You forgotten the timekeeping of the people of the earth
And lost Your wristwatch.
I shall tell You of our condition, that perhaps You may come sooner
For the vine that You planted has withered
And the branches have thirsted
And Your Gospel has scattered like the leaves of the trees
As for Herod, the killer of the infants, and his son, the killer of the Baptist
And Pilate and Herodias — do You remember Judas who hanged himself?
And Annas and Caiaphas and the men of the temple?
Herod has returned to kill our children every day!
And his son cuts off our heads for the eyes of the dancing girl
And Pilate — behold — washes his hands of our blood every day!
And Judas now betrays and hands over innocent blood to the oppressors,
And Annas and Caiaphas weave conspiracies every day
And they hand over every innocent person to be crucified on the charge of violating the law.
And they pay Judas from the thirty pieces of silver
Is it not strange? For they have all returned, O Lord, all of them
And You have not returned!!!!!!
And we thought they had become part of our past
And that You alone are the returning One, the One coming to us
And if You are not willing to come quickly?
Do not forsake us, O God, but reveal Yourself.
It is enough that You reveal Yourself in us
For we have believed that You are an anchor of hope
Or wait — wait, O God
Perhaps You tarry because You desire our victory?
That You may rejoice in us?
Tarry, then, O Jesus
You will see us triumphant over the mind of Herod and Pilate
Over the way of Caiaphas and Annas
You will see us bearing the banners of victory
Then come and meet us, O Jesus.
Come quickly
